The President of Poland Killed in Plane Crash in Russia ***** Our condolences to our Polish readers for the death of President Lech Kaczyński, his wife Maria, Bishop Tadeusz Płoski (of the Military Ordinariate), and the military commanders and civil servants who accompanied them to Russia to remember the men murdered by the Communists in Katyn in 1940. ******* A plane carrying the Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, and many of the countrys top leaders crashed as it landed in a heavy fog in the morning of April 10, 2010, killing everyone on board. The leaders were arriving in Russia to commemorate a World War II anniversary. Polish Presidnet Lech Kaczynski and his wife were killed in plane crash, when his TU-154, carrying an official Polish delegation, crashed in Smolensk Region, On board the plane were former Polish president-in-exile Ryszard Kaczorowski; the deputy speaker of Poland's parliament, Jerzy Szmajdzin'ski; the head of the president's chancellery, Wladyslaw Stasiak; and the head of the National Security Bureau, Aleksander Szczygo. The group was on their way to Smolensk to visit the Katyn memorial site, for Polish officers murdered during World War II.
