Army Soldiers Bear Brunt of War in Iraq
Just once I would like the news to report information on Iraq that would be beneficial to the troops currently serving there. How many Americans are currently aware of deployment lengths for Army soldiers? Does anyone know or care that our Army men and women are serving fifteen month deployments with less than twelve months at home? This is longer than any other branch of the armed forces. Our Marines would have the next highest length of deployments currently at nine months, while the Air Force and Navy are only serving six month tours. Fair, I think not.
We have allowed our Military to be divided into categories land, sea and air. I believe that if men and women enlisted in the Military they should be serving equally. One branch of service should not have to bear the brunt of the load based on a category. All of the men and women in the armed forces have been trained in basic weaponry. They know how to load, unload and fire a weapon. These are basic principles that every soldier has been taught regardless of their branch of service. Why are we not utilizing these skills and maximizing our troop reserves? I do not want to hear the reasoning of bickering and feuding military officials with the archaic rationale that one branch of service is better than another. According to the Pledge of Allegiance we are "One nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all." Why are we not fighting accordingly?
Why are members of different branches not allowed to volunteer for combat positions currently being held by Army personnel? If the Army can allow soldiers to volunteer for positions outside their military occupational specialty then other branches of service can as well. The Army allows a soldier serving in a role such as Military Intelligence to volunteer for a position as a gunner on a humvee to support convoys in Iraq. These men and women were not given months of special training for these positions. Therefore, months of special training would not be necessary for members of other divisions of the armed forces.
If action is not taken to find relief for Army personnel then the Army will soon have to close up shop. Our men and women cannot continue to sustain these lengths of deployment without incurring physical and mental detriment. Our Government is well aware of this and there have been numerous studies on the mental and physical strain due to prolonged deployments. In 2004 the Army cited that twelve month deployments were to long for our troops and that the mental and physical strain was affecting their performance and well being. Now they have increased their deployment lengths to fifteen months. If twelve months was taxing what will fifteen months do?
Of course the length of deployments is also a consideration factor for young Americans hankering to do their civic duty and fight for their country. The Army is currently having recruitment issues and no one has to ask why. How many young men and women do you suppose will want to join the Army, with fifteen month deployments, when they can join other branches of service where tours of duty are much shorter and less strenuous? Not to mention that soldiers currently serving in the Army will not be re-enlisting and who could blame them. Many have been to Iraq for numerous deployments and had to endure living conditions far worse than our Iraqi prisoners. I find this very sad and disheartening.
Then of course there is the Back Door Draft. This is when the Army holds our men and women hostage and forces them to serve their country after their contract date has expired. How does this happen you ask? Well, the contract our young soldiers sign has a clause that allows the Armed forces to keep them in service past their release date if there is a shortage of trained soldiers to fill critical roles in combat situations. Imagine having your heart set on starting a new chapter in your life and then being told you are going to Iraq for fifteen more months and there is nothing you can do. Now, not only do you have to deal with the stress of a fifteen month deployment, you now have compounded issues of anger and resentment. Does your government care? No! They put you in a uniform, give you a gun and ship you off to destination nowhere. I do not know about you but this makes me mad to think that our government can take advantage of young men and women who have already given more than enough.
I do not care if you support the war in Iraq or not. As Americans we should be giving something back to the men and women who are giving so much for us. Our Army soldiers are risking their lives everyday and many will not return home. They deserve to know that the people of their country are defending them. If you are concerned about the lengths of deployments and the conditions in which our soldiers have to live while serving in places such as Iraq and Afghanistan, do something about it. Write your government officials; make them answer to the people. Let them know you disagree with our soldiers serving fifteen month deployments. Now is the time for us, as a nation, to protect and defend our Army soldiers as they defend us so gallantly every day.

Why Replacing General McChrystal Was the Only Option
"Let me say to the American people, this is a change in personnel but it is not a change in policy." - Barack Obama
After several acts of insubordination by the former commander of the the ISAF and U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, General Stanley A. McChrystal, President Barack Obama was forced to make a difficult decision in regard to his future. Relieve him of duties as a consequence or allow him to stay on despite his actions...either way he would face criticism!
The bold and opinionated General served as commander from June 15, 2009 through June 23rd of this year. During that time he was found disregarding the White House and questioning the Presidents' policy for Afghanistan. Most recently McChrystal bashed the White House while being interviewed by a Rolling Stone journalist. He's quoted criticizing Vice President Joe Biden's proposed counterterrorism strategy describing him as being "shortsighted," saying it would lead to a state of "Chaos-istan."
The basis of our strong military, the foundation of our armed forces is solely grounded in the discipline of our soldiers and generals. A strictly obeyed chain of command and civilian control of the military is a key cornerstone of our democracy! When a soldier, airman, marine, etc disobeys their commanding officer there, with a doubt, will be consequences!
Disregard for the chain of command by a private, four star general or anyone in between jeopardizes the frame work and foundation of our military...which inadvertently threatens our national security. Furthermore, a kink so high up in the chain of command would have a terrible rippling effect throughout the soldiers on the ground, possibly resulting in soldiers disobeying their commanding officers on the platoon and squadron level.
Realizing these truths the Presidents' decision to replace General Stanley McChrystal was both un-questionable and very necessary. Undermining the authority his superiors and questioning the policy of the Commander in Chief overshadows his thirty-three years of dedicated service to the United States Army.
It's clear and blatantly evident that Stanley McChrystal lacks regard for military chain of command, his Commander in Chief and the concept of an un-politicized military. A chain of command embedded with the concept that your actions coincide with the orders of your superiors, a Commander in Chief designated in the U.S. Constitution with both the authority and responsibility of leading the military solely invested in him and a civilian controlled un-politicized military where policy and strategy are decided by the President and approved by him thereof.
The actions taken by President Obama, the acceptance of McChrystals' resignation and the appointment of General Petraeus, was not only the best decision but the only option he had. Allowing General McChrystal to keep his post would be pulling the rug from under our armed forces....and not to mention the lack of respect and reverence for the Office of the President.
"I welcome debate among my team, but I won't tolerate division." - Barack Obama
Earlier in the financial crisis during the Wall Street meltdown many thought the President should replace Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner when bonuses were paid out to executives despite government interference in the companies. I'm sure during that entire period, and in this particular instance, there was much a debate amongst the President's team. I'm sure that the President, If he didn't already know, questioned his advisers and Secretary Geithner on the issue. I say all this to say, the Obama team was carefully crafted but like all administrations there will be resignations, firing, and replacing but this one thing is true...despite ideological differences, debates, challenges, personalities and opinions there is one President, one leader and one Commander in Chief!

Keep in Touch
All relationships have their own problems. It depends from family to family, from the nature of a person to the nature of work. Nature of the work here means the type of job a person does. There are relationships where one of the mates mostly males are away on duty in some foreign land. He could be in the armed forces or a female partner in some foreign school. They are away and separated with the family. The result is stress due to separation. If you are in such type of a relationship then you need to make an effort to overcome this stress your partner is facing overseas or in some far off place.
If your partner is on duty in a foreign land then it becomes your duty to make him close to you. And the best way to remove this feeling is to keep in touch.
Communication is the way to bring him close to you. It becomes your duty to send him mails, talk to him on phone regularly and if that is not possible write letters to him. Keeping in touch gets people close to each other. It enhances love and does make a lot of difference in a relationship. It is frustrating for a person you away from his family and lover. So it becomes your responsibility to relieve him from the stress and frustration.
Moreover there communication saves you from building a gap between the two of you. If you are separated from each other and do not keep in touch you loose track of each other. A gap between the two builds up and when you meet you feel like strangers.
Keep in touch with each other and make the partner aware of what is happening at your end. Express your feelings and emotions and make your mate feel close to you. So when you get back and meet you can pick up from where you started. Such acts give assurance that you care and still love your mate. He feels very much attached to you and does not have any feeling of separation. It relieves your mate of the frustration and stress of being all alone in the some foreign land. The more you communicate with each other the closer you get to each other, if you communicate and try to take out the problem your partner is facing then it show your love for your mate.
This only strengthens your bond with your partner. Talk about the things you like about your partner now and then and make him or her feel enlightened. Talking about things you admire about your partner changes the tensed mood of your mate and brings him/her closer to you. It strengthens the bond between the partners. Lack of communication is the reason behind a weak relationship. So never stop communicating. Give each other security of your love by communicating through phones, letters or e-mails so that the love between the two of you never diminishes even is you are separated distant apart.

Military Spouse Tuition Assistance Eligibility Requirements
As the spouse of a service member in the Armed Forces, you may be eligible to receive tuition assistance (TA) to help you pursue your educational and career goals.
The Department of Veteran Affairs has introduced the Spouse and Dependents' Assistance (DEA) program which offers assistance for education and training to those who qualify. Benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs as well as apprenticeships and on-the-job training.
Each branch of the military offers its own program to provide assistance to spouses. These programs are spearheaded and administered by the following relief agencies:
-- Army: Army Emergency Relief (overseas and stateside)
-- Navy: Navy Marine Corps Relief Society
-- Air Force: Air Force Aid Society
-- Marine Corps: Navy Marine Corps Relief Society
While spouses don't receive the same assistance as their active duty service members, funds received by utilizing available programs are helpful in defraying the costs associated with obtaining a college degree. When applying for assistance, make sure you know the qualification requirements, specific deadlines, and paperwork required.
In an effort to help military spouses and family members with their educational objectives, the Department of Defense offers these new programs:
1. Post 9-11 GI Bill Transferability
2. Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts
3. Military Spouse Scholarships
Spouse and Dependents' Assistance (DEA) program which offers assistance for education and training to those who qualify. Benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs as well as apprenticeships and on-the-job training.
Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts was designed to provide assistance to military spouses trying to obtain the skills and credentials they need to begin or further their careers. Through these accounts, the costs of training and education are covered, giving participants the chance to get a degree or credential in portable fields that are in demand across the country. My CAA can be used to pay up to $3,000 in fees for one year and may be renewed for an additional year for a two-year total of up to $6,000.
Perhaps you are under the impression that scholarships are too difficult to find. There is a fabulous online resource created to specifically to help service members find scholarships. Visit the "Scholarship Finder" at Military.com..

E Army U
Most people know about veteran's benefits. It's heavily advertised that you can sign up for the US Army and they'll give you a VA loan and money for school after you've served your term. Few people, even the Army's own soldiers, realize that you can get a university education, even a graduate degree, for free online while serving your country.
Welcome to E Army U, the military answer to educating soldiers in the 21st century. Via the web, and at times through a free laptop for soldiers, it offers university degrees on flexible schedules. Soldiers complete the work in their off-duty hours, just as their civilian counterparts might work full time and go to school in their off hours. This program is available to all soldiers.
It actually consists of two related programs, Go Army Ed and E Army U. Go Army Ed is a tuition reimbursement program for distance education courses offered by civilian colleges and universities. This covers 100% of the soldier's tuition, fees, and books, up to a semester hour cap of $250 and an annual cap of $4,500. The school the soldier chooses must be accredited in the US; there is a list of approved schools on the Go Army Ed website.
E Army U is a web portal that consolidates the distance learning offerings of dozens of colleges and universities, allowing soldiers to log on to a single site to manage their entire college education. As an officially recognized university itself, it allows the soldier to bypass the residency requirements that traditional schools have. It also allows the soldier to apply for tuition reimbursement, do all paperwork filing, and track transcript information, all in one place.
There is a single application for all 25 universities and 140 degree programs that participate in E Army U, and credits earned are guaranteed to be two-way transferable between all of the institutions. Soldiers who have been able to get into the Laptop Program (suspended indefinitely for new applicants) can also access unlimited tutoring. The accredited university grants the degree the soldier earns.
Since the program was specifically designed to reach soldiers regardless of their duty station, thousands have transferred to new posts without interrupting their studies. More than 31% of E Army U students either extend service or reenlist specifically to access this benefit. In some cases, non-commissioned officers have finished their bachelor's degree through E Army U, and then reenlisted as an officer in order to pursue a master's degree.

Learn to Defend Yourself - Why You're Never Unarmed in a Self Defense Situation
In the realm of self defense thinking and training, there is the idea of being "armed" and "unarmed." This idea presupposes that you are either carrying a weapon or "empty-handed." And yet, if we consider that our ability is only as limited as our ability to recognize options, we can see that there is no such distinction to the person who is really skilled at self defense.
This article takes a look at the real ability to be able to defend yourself against a brutal attacker who will be taking advantage of your limiting perceptions and recognition of options.
It's funny how, once they find out that I teach self defense, many men take this opportunity to puff out their chests and let me know, in no uncertain terms, that they don't need self defense training because they'll "just shoot 'em!"
But, when I ask them to allow me to see their weapon, they admit that it's at home in their dresser drawer, gun safe, or anywhere but on them at the moment.
I then remind them, showing my fists that, "my weapons are right here!"
Now, I don't say this to intimidate or impress them, and I'm not saying here to impress you. What I am doing is impressing upon you the point of this article - the point that to rely on physical weapons like guns, knives, or any other special tool that has the title of "self defense weapon," is to ignore not only all of the body weapons that you possess, but to ignore the most powerful weapon you possess - your brain!
I also want you to think about the fact that, if you rely on a weapon for self defense, then you will be practically powerless without it!
In a self defense situation, you must have the ability to:
Adapt to the unique situation in which you find yourself
Recognize and use everyday items for self defense - regardless of whether or not they are commonly perceived as weapons or not
Deal with any weapons he might have brought with him - and even to be able to use his own weapons against him
And, there is also the reality that, even if you have a weapon, you may not be able or justified in using it.
An example of this comes from my days as a police officer. Just because I had a firearm doesn't mean that I could use lethal force against someone who was trying to punch or wrestle me to the ground. So, not only was my sidearm useless in those situations, but it could also be a liability in that I had to deal with the perpetrator AND guard my weapon against him taking it - AT THE SAME TIME!
Another thing that I talk about in my combat handgun and other weapon training courses is this:
Just because you have a weapon, doesn't mean that you'll be able to get to it before he can do damage to you! Imagine having a handgun holstered on your hip while simultaneously staring down the barrel of your attacker's own gun. If you try to go for your own weapon in this moment, you'll die.
So, try to avoid falling into the trap of seeing yourself as "armed" if you have a so-called "official" weapon, and "unarmed" if you don't. Instead, train to be able to:
1) Develop more of your own natural body parts AS weapons, rather than just your hands and feet
2) Recognize everyday items as potential weapons, and...
3) Use even your environment as a tool for self defense.
This way, you'll never see yourself or feel as if you're unarmed in any situation.
